Rockstar's $400 GTA 6 Box Is Being SCALPED for $1,500 It's Still in Stock

A $400 box is being relisted for a thousand more, while the button at the source still works. Somebody in that chain is confused.

What is in the $400 GTA 6 collector's box?

Eleven items, and not the game. Rockstar's store page calls it a premium collectible set: a six inch figure of Macca the Gator, the pink alligator who turns out to be the star of a television show inside Leonida, whose base twists open into a stash compartment; a pair of matte black Oakley Frogskins with a pink GTA 6 logo; a New Era snapback with Leonida embroidery; a ripstop cross body bag; a pink glass magnetic mirror; a manatee shot glass; a swizzle spoon with a Rockstar logo; a razor blade shaped keychain; nine enamel pins in a tin; a sticker pack; and a double sided poster with the show on one side and the full Leonida map on the other. It ships in the launch window and the store page says the game is sold separately. Pre-orders opened on 24 September at $399.99, limited to one per customer, and the box is not eligible for free shipping.

The arithmetic, done once

Stock Oakley Frogskins with those lenses list around $160 at retail, and a New Era snapback usually runs in the thirties. Call those two roughly $200 together, generously. The other nine items are a figure, a bag, some glassware, a keychain, pins, stickers and paper, and Rockstar sells the collection only as a bundle, so nothing in it has an individual price.

The one item worth singling out is the paper. Nobody has confirmed whether the standard boxed copy of GTA 6 includes a map, so until someone does, that poster is the only official full map of Leonida anyone can hold. For comparison, the Cyberpunk 2077 collector's edition included the game and still drew criticism for its price.

The joke in the middle of the box

Look at the mirror, the razor blade keychain and the small spoon, sitting together in a product named after Vice City. Rockstar has not said a word about what those three things are for in combination, and it does not need to. This is the studio that built a game around 1986 Miami.

It is also the only part of the box with an idea in it, and the idea is a joke aimed at adults who remember the first Vice City. Which is a fairly narrow audience for a $400 joke.

The outrage about no game inside is a rerun

In June 2018 Rockstar announced the Red Dead Redemption 2 Collector's Box at $99.99: a metal tithing box with a lock, a coin, a puzzle, a bandana, playing cards, a pin set and a treasure map, with no game inside. Asked why, Rockstar said at the time that the box shipped without the game so players could pair it with the game edition of their choice. That was the reasoning, on the record, eight years ago.

What has changed is the number: four times the money for the same idea. And the 2018 explanation no longer survives, because the physical standard edition of GTA 6 is a download code in a box with no disc. So the game edition of their choice is, for many buyers, another box with nothing in it. Two boxes with nothing in either and a code, for roughly $480 before shipping. Rockstar has not repeated the pairing line this time, which is probably wise.

Grading an earlier call, honestly

On 15 September this site said not to believe the collector's edition leak, on the basis that Rockstar listed two editions and nobody could say where the photos came from. The box was real. The photos from the 9th look like the product that went on sale on the 24th, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. That call was too cautious about whether the thing existed.

Where the earlier position holds is the name. Nearly every headline said collector's edition. Rockstar's announcement and store page say collector's box, and the page states the game is sold separately. An edition includes the game; a box is merchandise. The gap between those two words is the $400 people are angry about. Half marks: the thing existed, the name did not.

The eBay part, which is where the story is

Within a day of pre-orders opening, listings appeared starting around $750, with most asking around a thousand and reports putting the top of the range near $1,500. That is the reported tier. What the same reporting also shows, and what was checked directly, is that the Rockstar store listing still said pre-order the following day. It had not sold out. It was still $400.

A listing is not a sale. Nobody has produced a completed transaction at those prices. What the listings show is scalpers reading while supplies last and limited on a product page and pricing in a sellout that, at the time of writing, had not happened at the source. Rockstar has never said how limited, and the one per customer cap is the only hard scarcity mechanic anyone can point to. Note added later: the United Kingdom listing ran out on 27 September, and an Australian retailer sold through almost instantly at a higher price, which is covered in the follow up on why neither flop nor sellout proves anything.

Where this lands

If you want the box, it is $400 at the source, and paying anyone more than that while the button still works is the worst deal in this pre-order cycle. Pre-orders are open in North America and Europe, with other regions to follow, and shipping is extra.

The bet, flagged as one: if it does sell out, the Leonida map poster turns up on its own, because Rockstar has said more collectibles are coming to the store and a poster is the cheapest thing in the box to make more of.

What the video covers

  • Every one of the eleven items, from Rockstar's own store page
  • The rough value arithmetic, and the one item worth having
  • The 2018 Red Dead collector's box at a quarter of the price, and Rockstar's explanation then
  • An honest grade of this site's earlier call on the leak
  • Why the eBay listings are asking prices and nothing more

What we do not know yet

  • How limited the box actually is, since no number has been published
  • Whether anyone has completed a resale at the advertised prices
  • Whether the map poster is sold separately later
