A sellout tells you the shelf is empty. It does not tell you how big the shelf was.
Did the $400 GTA 6 collector's box sell out?
In some regions, as far as anyone outside Rockstar can see, and the picture is uneven. On 27 September a large GTA tracker account reported that the Goodtime State Vice City Collection had sold out in the UK after two days. In Australia, where Rockstar's own store does not ship, EB Games listed it on 28 September at $699.95 Australian and sold through almost immediately, while another retailer ran a ballot for members. The United States is genuinely unclear: one creator said it had not sold out there, one outlet reported it had without naming a store, and another wrote that it had sold out according to reports while in the same sentence noting it was listed as available. The honest answer is to open the store page yourself. And none of it proves anything about demand, because Rockstar has never said how many boxes exist.
The weekend everyone called it a flop
Pre-orders opened on Thursday 24 September at $399.99, or £349.99 in the United Kingdom, with eleven items, no copy of the game and a one per customer cap. A few hours earlier a list of around 55 unannounced Rockstar store products had been pulled from the store's back end, with a Vice City collection capped at one per person among them.
A day in, one outlet reported the box could still be ordered on both the US and UK stores after a full 24 hours. Another went through Reddit and found people who had bought it on Thursday, slept on it and cancelled. A third ran a headline saying it had failed to sell out nearly 48 hours in, resting on a post from a community account. All of that is reported, and by reported it means outlets and fan accounts watching a store page, which is a long way from Rockstar saying anything.
Everyone was reading a clock
Over the same weekend the eBay listings appeared, with resellers asking as much as $1,500 for a pre-order of a box anyone could still buy at retail. That was covered here on 29 September.
What that coverage did not say, and should have, is that every single person writing about this was counting hours, because hours were the only thing available to count. Then the clock story fell over.
The UK, and then Australia
On 27 September a tracker account reported the collection sold out in the UK after two days, noting Australia and some other regions were still to open. That is reported: an account reading a store page, with no Rockstar statement that anything sold out anywhere.
Australia is the part that changes the reading. An Australian outlet reported EB Games listing the box at 11am on 28 September at $699.95 Australian and selling out almost instantly, with another chain running a ballot for members. At the exchange rate, $400 is roughly 570 Australian, so buyers there were asked for something like $130 over the straight conversion, and it went faster than anywhere else on record. If price were the thing holding this box back, the most expensive market should have lagged. It led.
The number nobody has
The inference here is that each region received its own allocation and the UK's simply ran out first. The gap between two days in the UK and almost no time at EB Games is probably about how many boxes each store was given, which brings everything back to the missing figure.
Rockstar has published the price, the ship date and the one per customer cap, and no total. Say the UK received 500 boxes, a made up number to show the problem: two days would be slow for anything with this logo on it. Make it 50,000 and the flop headlines were simply wrong. Nobody outside Rockstar knows which world this is, including everyone who declared it a bomb and everyone who has since declared it a smash.
A correction, and why it matters
The article published here on 29 September carried the phrase still in stock. By the time it went up, the UK listing had already been empty for roughly a day. That framing was wrong, and the mistake was treating a store page status as a verdict.
The people now saying sold out as though it closes the case are making the same mistake from the other side. Sold out on a pre-order page is a status, not a measurement. The same thing happened on this site a month ago with the GTA 6 DualSense, which showed as sold out at one retailer and was taking orders again that afternoon.
Where it lands
The box is still a box without a game in it, and the arithmetic has not improved: a standard copy of GTA 6 is $79.99, so five copies come to $399.95, which is four cents less than one box containing no copy of the game. Rockstar has done the no game box before, with the Red Dead Redemption 2 Collector's Box at $99.99 in 2018. What changed is the multiple.
The bet, flagged as one: Rockstar never publishes how many it made. Take-Two reports to investors quarterly and a merchandise box is not getting its own line, so this argument probably never gets settled.

Evidence tier for the price, the contents, the ship date and the one per customer cap: confirmed, from Rockstar's own listing. For the UK sellout and the Australian sellout: reported, from a tracker account and an Australian outlet, with no Rockstar statement. For the United States status: unclear, with outlets contradicting each other. The regional allocation reading is inference, and the prediction that no figure is ever published is a bet.
