Rockstar Gave GTA 6's Biggest Secrets to a Magazine That Was DEAD

9:52 Game Informer · weather · wildlife By Updated

A magazine landing 51 days before launch cannot out-reveal two trailers and 27 minutes of footage. So it went where footage cannot.

What is in Game Informer's GTA 6 cover story?

Three threads, according to Game Informer's own announcement, plus 12 new screenshots across 14 pages, with the digital issue on sale 29 September. The first is weather, described as systems simulating Florida's less sunny weather phenomena, built on Rockstar's RAGE engine. The second is wildlife, native and otherwise, on land, in the air and at sea. The third is how Rockstar researched Miami and Florida to build what the announcement calls its most culturally and aesthetically accurate world to date. The writer is a senior associate editor who describes himself as a lifelong native of South Florida. Nothing about the story mode or online is mentioned, and no PC version is dated. No outlet has quoted a line from inside the feature, so everything beyond the announcement is still sealed.

The missing word

Hurricane does not appear anywhere in Game Informer's text. Less sunny weather phenomena is a careful way of saying rain and cloud without promising a storm, and that phrasing reads as chosen rather than accidental.

So any thumbnail claiming the issue confirms hurricanes before it is published has not read a page of it, because nobody outside the magazine has.

Why the page count comparison misleads

Game Informer's December 2012 issue ran 18 pages and was where the world first met Michael, Franklin and Trevor, ten months before GTA 5 launched. The May 2007 issue was the first place Niko Bellic's name was printed. Those covers had to carry an entire game on paper, which is a different job.

This one lands 51 days before launch, after two trailers, a 27 minute Extended Look, the box art, a magazine shoot in August and a $400 collector's box. A magazine cannot out-reveal that, which is presumably why the 14 pages go where footage cannot: rain systems, animal rosters, research trips. Fourteen pages on how the weather works is a better trade than 18 pages of introductions already delivered.

The magazine nearly was not here to run it

In August 2024, GameStop shut Game Informer down after 33 years and 368 issues. The site went dark and the archive disappeared with it. In March 2025 it returned under new ownership, and it says it operates as an independent editorial outlet making all of its own coverage decisions.

Then in May 2026 it teased a cover with the game's name redacted, and the internet decided it was GTA 6. It was a different game entirely, at 16 pages. The magazine never promised GTA 6; the audience wrote that script itself. Four months later it has the real one, which suggests the tradition matters more to Rockstar than whose name is on the masthead.

The collector's item pitch, and what it costs

Game Informer pitches the issue as a collector's item, but it is not a limited edition. Subscribers get it first and it reaches newsstands in the weeks after, and the magazine's own subscription FAQ says a first issue for a new subscriber can take four to six weeks to arrive. Subscribe today and you might be reading it in November.

The comparison people reach for is the August magazine shoot whose print run sold out and resold for a good deal above cover before a reprint. The advice here is simple: do not pay a reseller for a magazine still on the press. For the words, the digital issue exists on the 29th. For the object, the print will still exist in a month.

What is worth reading it for

Rockstar's site lists six regions of Leonida, and a road sign in the Extended Look reads Capri, which is not among them. Fourteen pages on Vice City and Leonida is the first place that gap could be settled either way.

The other thing is the word staggering, which the announcement uses for the wildlife. Staggering is an adjective. The number behind it is the interesting part, even if it turns out smaller than the word suggests.

What the video covers

  • What the 14 pages are actually about, from Game Informer's own announcement
  • The word that never appears in it
  • Why the comparison with the 2012 GTA 5 cover misses the point
  • The magazine's closure in 2024 and its return in 2025
  • Why paying above cover price for this issue makes no sense

What we do not know yet

  • Everything inside the feature, which no outlet has quoted
  • Whether the issue names a seventh region of Leonida
  • The number behind the word staggering
