A vote cast before anyone can play the game is closer to a poll than an award. The Joysticks already run one of those, and GTA 6 has won it twice.
Is GTA 6 eligible for Game of the Year at the Golden Joysticks?
No, and the rules are specific. Future's rules page says games must have been released between 1 November 2025 and 25 September 2026 to compete in the main publicly voted categories. There is a second, later window for Ultimate Game of the Year covering releases between 8 November 2025 and 25 October 2026, with a separate public vote from 26 to 30 October. GTA 6 lands on 19 November, which is 25 days past that later cutoff and eight days after the ceremony itself. There is an exception clause for games arriving right at the start of the voting window where judges already had an embargo copy, and November is not October. But one bullet down, the same page says games set for release after 11 November 2026 are eligible for the Most Wanted award, and GTA 6 qualifies for exactly that.
The category the coverage skipped
GamesRadar, a Future site owned by the same company that runs the Joysticks, wrote that the timing means GTA 6 is not eligible for any of this year's awards. Its own rules page says otherwise for Most Wanted Game. That is most likely shorthand for the categories that count rather than bad faith, but it is the kind of gap worth pointing at.
GTA 6 won Most Wanted Game in November 2024 and again in November 2025, taking Best Game Trailer the same night for the second trailer. Three Golden Joysticks and zero playable minutes. The 2025 win landed fourteen days after Rockstar announced the delay, so the room handed it a trophy for not being out, two weeks after it confirmed it would not be out for another year. A third is a bet rather than a fact until the shortlist is published.
The delay is what moved the eligibility
GTA 6 was eligible for this year's Ultimate Game of the Year until 6 November 2025, the day Rockstar moved the game from 26 May to 19 November. The May date sat inside that window with five months to spare.
Rockstar's post said the extra months were for the level of polish players have come to expect. Strauss Zelnick called the new date a great release window and noted it kept the game in the same fiscal year, which is a statement about accounts rather than trophies. The awards calendar almost certainly did not come up, and that is the right priority.
Why the big five sweep is out of reach
Baldur's Gate 3 won Game of the Year at all five of the major shows in one season, and Clair Obscur matched it. That sweep has become the benchmark. GTA 6 cannot repeat it in a single season because the first leg is already gone.
GamesRadar's writer expects GTA 6 to win all five anyway, a year late, while noting purists would say a late sweep is not a sweep. That seems right, and it matters less than the fact that a studio chose polish over a voting window.
The Game Awards is the one that is not settled
The Game Awards takes place in December and its eligibility dates for 2026 had not been published at the time of the video, so there is no cutoff on paper. Last year's cutoff was the third Friday of November, and if that pattern holds GTA 6 clears it by a day.
But the ballot does not run on the cutoff. Nominees are chosen by a jury of more than a hundred outlets, and last year's ballots went in roughly two weeks before the nominees were announced. The show's own FAQ notes publishers may provide advance access so jurors can meet the deadline. So eligibility is probably fine, and the open question is whether Rockstar hands a hundred outlets a build in early November for a game launching on the 19th. Its record points the other way: Red Dead Redemption 2's review embargo lifted the day before launch, with copies out only days earlier. Two weeks ahead of launch does not appear anywhere in Rockstar's history, which is inference and labelled as such.

Evidence tier for the eligibility windows and the Most Wanted rule: confirmed, quoted from Future's own rules page. For the delay date and Zelnick's comment: confirmed. For a third Most Wanted nomination: bet, pending the shortlist. For Rockstar not providing an early jury build: inference from its previous launches. See how this site grades evidence.
