Rockstar Answered the Fish Question Not the Money One

8:23 open questions · money · heists By Updated

A person who had Rob Nelson across the table still cannot tell you how heists are planned. That is not a failure of the question. It is the shape of what Rockstar will say.

What has Rockstar still not explained about GTA 6?

The things that decide how you play. Money has no confirmed destination beyond garages, cars, guns, clothes and a gym membership: there is no property market, and businesses in the story are not confirmed anywhere. Heists have been glimpsed in trailers with nothing said about how they are planned or whether they exist outside the story, which is worth comparing with GTA 5, whose gameplay video ten weeks before launch showed the planning board. Whether a casino opens is untouched, and it is a live question because Rockstar switched off every gambling table in GTA Online's casino for Australian accounts in July. And story expansions have not been mentioned. What has been answered, all of it between late August and early September, is that fishing is catch and release, hunting unlocks through a contact and pays, there are hundreds of interiors with no number given, residential safehouses are not for sale, first person has not been implemented, and the target is 30 frames per second.

The answers are three weeks old

Rob Nelson told one of the creators that keeping fish did not fit this game, so fishing is catch and release, with the quote published on 3 September. Hunting unlocks through a friend who already knows Jason, and it pays. On interiors, Nelson said hundreds and would not give a number. Residential safehouses are not for sale, which fits what he told Famitsu about hideouts changing chapter by chapter, closer to Red Dead Redemption 2's camps than a GTA 5 apartment. Garages can be bought. A Spanish creator from the same visit asked about first person and was told it has not been implemented. A Brazilian creator got the 30 frames per second target.

All of that is creators reporting Nelson consistently with each other, none of it published by Rockstar as a specification, and all of it landing between 27 August and 3 September. If a thumbnail sells those answers as this week's news, the news is a rerun.

Money is the sharpest gap on the list

Everything Rockstar has shown about robberies only works if money has somewhere to go: the duffel bags, cash that can disappear when you die, the story stalling if Jason and Lucia go broke. The confirmed sinks are small. No property market is confirmed. Businesses in the story are not confirmed anywhere findable.

The bet, flagged as one, is that Rockstar keeps purchases story gated and saves businesses for online, because that is where GTA 5's money ended up and where the long tail of revenue lives. Being wrong about that would be the best news of November.

The casino question has a date attached

On 28 July, Rockstar switched off every gambling table in GTA Online's Diamond Casino for Australian accounts: blackjack, roulette, the horses, even the free daily wheel spin. Dataminers found the flag, which is named for geographic gambling restriction, and Rockstar has said nothing about why. Counts of how many countries are now locked out range from around 50 to close to 60. Either way it is a large slice of the player base, and the switch was built three months before GTA 6 ships.

Leonida is Florida, and Florida has enormous casinos, so a building on the map seems likely. Whether you can place real chips at launch is doubtful, and that is inference rather than a source.

The part of the list that is a wish list

Cruise ship interiors, the Bermuda Triangle, hurricanes, cheat codes, a replay editor. To his credit the creator labels these as a wish list himself, which is more than most do.

Two have a track record worth stating. GTA 5 got first person in November 2014, fourteen months after launch, when the game reached PlayStation 4. The editor took longer still and arrived on PC first. Both rode in on a new platform rather than the original release, so if GTA 6 gets either, expect it on the PC version, which has no date. On cheat codes, offered as opinion with no source: no mainline GTA has shipped without them.

The two structural blanks

Heists and story expansions are the items that would change how you play rather than what you look at. Two, perhaps three heists have been glimpsed in trailers, plus one screenshot inside a vault, with nothing about planning or whether they exist outside the story.

On expansions, GTA 5 never received a single player one, and a 2020 report said Rockstar planned to grow the map over time. Grow it for whom is the question. The bet is online, because the last time Rockstar had single player expansion plans they became online updates, and the financial incentive has not changed.

Evidence tier for the fishing, hunting, interiors, safehouse, first person and frame rate answers: confirmed as consistent reporting of Nelson's own words, though not published by Rockstar as a specification. For the July gambling shutdown: confirmed, with the reason unstated by Rockstar. For a casino appearing on the map: inference. For money sinks and story expansions going to online: bet.
