The gap between 170 and 200 is smaller than it looks, because the two numbers were never measuring the same thing.
How many animals are in GTA 6?
Over 170 species across land, air and sea, according to Game Informer's cover story, which also names flamingos, manatees, pelicans, alligators and rhesus macaques as examples and says certain animals are categorised as Rare, Discoverable and Legendary with their identities withheld. That figure is reported rather than published by Rockstar, and it comes with no breakdown by birds, mammals or fish. The comparison everyone reaches for is Red Dead Redemption 2, which Rockstar described in 2018 as having around 200 species of animals, birds and fish. Those two counts are not built the same way, and the widely repeated claim that Red Dead has exactly 178 species comes from a community compendium that counts only what the game asks you to catalogue, which is a different and smaller set than everything that exists in the world.
Two numbers that measure differently
Rockstar's 2018 figure for Red Dead was a marketing statement covering animals, birds and fish. Game Informer's figure for GTA 6 is a magazine's summary of what Rockstar told it, covering species across land, air and sea, with no categories given.
Neither is an audited count, and placing them side by side as though they were produces a comparison that does not survive a second look. A community compendium total is a third kind of number again, because a compendium lists what the game tracks rather than what the world contains.
What is actually on screen
A frame by frame pass through the 27 minutes produced up to 14 kinds of animal, of which five could be identified with real confidence and seven were nameable. That is the honest ceiling from footage alone, and it is a long way below 170, which is expected: a marketing film is not a wildlife survey.
The airboat run through the wetlands is where most of it sits, with pelicans, manatees and rays visible in a single stretch. Elsewhere there are gulls, pigeons, dolphins and the dog from the interaction menu. What Rockstar chose to show, and the order it showed it in, says more about the pitch than about the ecosystem.
The alligator that is not there
There is no alligator anywhere in the Extended Look. In a game set in a parody of Florida, whose own collector's box has a pink alligator as its centrepiece, that is a genuinely strange absence from 27 minutes of footage.
It is worth being precise about what that means. Game Informer names alligators among the species in the game, so this is not a claim that they are absent from GTA 6. It is that Rockstar did not put one in the footage it chose to show, which is a different and more interesting fact.
What you can do with them
The interaction menu over the dog includes a study option, which points at a compendium of some kind. Fishing is catch and release, confirmed through Nelson, and hunting unlocks through a contact and pays. The removed PEGI listing described drug use and violence in detail but says nothing useful about animals.
So the systems around wildlife are partly known and the content is almost entirely unknown. Which animals are Rare, Discoverable or Legendary is being withheld deliberately, and any list claiming to name them is a fan list rather than a Rockstar one.
How they look, and what is missing
Fur and feather work has been described by Rockstar's own people, including coats that mat and clump when wet, and the footage supports the general impression without allowing a close inspection of anything.
The ocean is the gap. For a coastal state, remarkably little sea life appears in the footage beyond the dolphins and the airboat stretch, which may mean nothing at all about the shipped game and is still worth noting as a thing the marketing did not choose to sell.
Where the count lands
Over 170 is reported and plausible, and it is not comparable to 200 without knowing what either number counts. On screen there are at most 14 kinds of animal, which tells you about the trailer rather than the game.
Any list titled every animal in GTA 6 is, as of now, a fan reconstruction. Rockstar has named a handful of examples and is explicitly keeping the interesting ones back.

- Every animal visible in the Extended Look, with the honest identification limit
- The alligator that appears nowhere in the footage

What we do not know yet

Evidence tier for the 170 figure and the Rare, Discoverable and Legendary categories: reported, from Game Informer's cover story rather than published by Rockstar. For Rockstar's 2018 Red Dead figure: confirmed as a company statement, though not an audited count. For what is visible in the Extended Look: confirmed as footage, with identification limits stated.
