The last person who leaked GTA 6 at scale has been in custody for almost four years. His trial is now set for November 2026, the same month Grand Theft Auto 6 launches.
Was the GTA 6 hacker released?
No. This is the single most common misreading of the July 2026 headlines, and it is worth stating plainly before anything else. Arion Kurtaj was moved out of a secure hospital and into an ordinary prison. That is a change of custody, not a release. He has been held continuously since his arrest in September 2022, first on remand, then under an indefinite hospital order handed down in December 2023, and now in the prison system while he waits for a criminal trial listed for November 2026. The reason he was moved is that doctors assessed him as fit to stand trial, which he was not judged to be in 2023. A trial is now possible where before it was not. Nothing about the move suggests his detention is ending, and the date matters for a second reason: November 2026 is also the month GTA 6 is due.
What happened in the September 2022 Rockstar hack?
Kurtaj was part of Lapsus$, a small group of teenagers who spent 2022 breaking into large technology companies. The Rockstar intrusion is the one that made his name public. He reached the studio's internal communications system and posted ninety clips of pre-release GTA 6 footage to a fan forum, years before the game was due to ship.
The detail that stuck with people is how ordinary the setup was. Court reporting placed him in a Travelodge hotel room working with an Amazon Fire Stick, a television and a phone. There was no operations centre and no exotic tooling. That gap, between the scale of what leaked and the equipment it took to leak it, is a large part of why the case is still argued about four years later.
Why a secure hospital instead of prison?
In December 2023 he was convicted of hacking, fraud and extortion, having also been linked to intrusions at Uber and Nvidia. He was eighteen. The judge ordered an indefinite hospital order rather than a fixed prison sentence, on the basis that he is severely autistic and had been assessed as intending to return to cybercrime as soon as he was able. The order carried no end date. He would be held until mental health professionals judged that he no longer posed a risk to the public.
That is an unusual disposal, and it is exactly why the 2026 development was reported so widely. An indefinite hospital order is not a sentence that simply runs out.
What changed in July 2026?
Reporting in July 2026 said Kurtaj had been moved from the secure hospital into a standard prison after being assessed as medically fit to stand trial. Because the 2023 proceedings never included a conventional trial on the facts, that assessment reopened the possibility of one. It is now listed for November 2026.
