Three days after making a list of what Rockstar had never shown, a leak claimed to tick several boxes at once. Not all of them survive checking.
What was actually in the August 2026 GTA 6 leak?
Two gameplay clips and an image presented as the map of Leonida, surfacing on 18 August 2026, with Take-Two issuing takedowns within hours. The clips are the substantial part: they carry HUD details, which is the first time anything resembling the game's interface has been visible, and they reach a strong consensus tier among people who examined them. Jason appears on screen. The map is the weak part. The GTA 6 Mapping Project, the fan effort that has spent years assembling geography from official material, calls the image fake, and that is the most qualified opinion available. Two items on the list, Online and PC, were not touched at all. Underneath all of it sits the 2022 precedent: leaked builds are old builds, and nothing here is the release version.
Gameplay: the item the leak genuinely moved
Before 18 August, Rockstar had released four minutes and eighteen seconds of official footage across thirteen years, and not one frame of it showed the interface. The leaked clips show HUD elements. That is why this item earns a strong consensus tier rather than a shrug: it is the first look at how the game presents itself to a player.
Consensus is not confirmation. Rockstar has said nothing, and the material is unofficial by definition.
Jason and Lucia: half an answer
Jason appears on screen. That is more than existed before. What still has not been explained anywhere is the dual protagonist mechanic itself: how switching works, whether it is contextual, mission-gated or free. Seeing a character is not the same as understanding the system built around him.
The map: why this one gets a red mark
The leaked image includes a surprise fifth county, which is exactly the kind of detail that makes a fake spread. The GTA 6 Mapping Project, a community effort with thousands of members that reconstructs the map from official footage frame by frame, assessed the image as fake.
When the most qualified group available says a thing is fake and nothing contradicts them, the honest tier is not "disputed". It is fake until someone shows otherwise.
Online and PC: untouched
Neither item moved. GTA 6 Online remains a subject Rockstar has not discussed beyond describing the game as a single-player experience, and the PC version remains unannounced. A leak that answers nothing about these two leaves the list mostly where it was.
The old build problem
The 2022 leak is the precedent that matters. Material that escapes is material that existed some time ago, often long before it escapes, and treating it as a preview of the shipping game is how people end up disappointed by things that were never final.
