GTA 6 Ran Out of Tickets at Tokyo Game Show in 30 Minutes. Rockstar Didn't Show Up

8:30 Tokyo Game Show · PlayStation · Japan By Updated

Nothing in that room exists that you cannot get at home, except the shirt and the shaking floor. Which is why the shirt and the shaking floor are the product.

Can you play GTA 6 at Tokyo Game Show?

No. Nobody outside Rockstar has played GTA 6, and that includes everyone at Makuhari Messe this week. What exists at the show is a theater inside Sony's PlayStation booth, confirmed on PlayStation Japan's own blog, playing the Extended Look from 27 August on a 300 inch screen with Sony's floor haptics shaking in time with the audio. Everyone who sits through it gets a co-branded GTA 6 and PlayStation t-shirt while stocks last. Rockstar has no booth at the show and neither does Take-Two, so the only place the game exists at the largest games show in Japan is inside a room Sony built and paid for. The footage is the same film that premiered on Netflix three weeks ago and is free to watch online.

What Sony actually built

PlayStation Japan put the details in writing on 10 September, so this part is confirmed. The theater plays the Extended Look on a 300 inch screen, a little over seven and a half metres corner to corner, with floor haptics underneath. Every viewer gets one t-shirt, in size L only, while stocks last. Push Square described the room as closed off to anyone without a ticket.

Floor haptics under a pre-rendered video is, in fairness, a rumble pack for your shoes. Rockstar's own caption says the film was captured on PlayStation 5, and it plays perfectly well on a phone. Sony did not build that room to show anybody footage they had not seen. It built it so a few hundred people a day would queue for it, because the queue is the thing that gets photographed.

The line turned up, on a business day

Push Square's editor walked the booth on the first day and wrote that every ticket for that day's GTA 6 showings had gone by 10:30 in the morning, with doors having opened at 10:00, on what was meant to be a business day. He called it the key attraction of the day, ahead of the playable games, and described Japan's relationship with the series as morbid curiosity. Nikkei Cross Trend separately reported the numbered tickets going immediately.

Two outlets, the same morning, the same detail. That makes the ticket run reported with high confidence rather than confirmed, because Sony has not published a seat count. If anyone wanted a photograph that says Japan wants GTA 6, Sony had it before lunch on day one.

The 2013 chart that explains the room

In its first week in Japan in 2013, GTA 5 sold 360,115 copies on PlayStation 3 by Famitsu's count, the best launch week any Western game had ever had there, alongside a perfect 40 out of 40 review score. In Famitsu's year list for April 2013 to April 2014, GTA 5 finished seventh with 699,182 copies and was the only PlayStation 3 game in the top ten. Pokémon X and Y sat at number one.

By GTA standards that is small: roughly 700,000 in a country, for a game that has since sold more than 220 million worldwide. By the standard of Western games in Japan, it is the top of the mountain, and it was climbed on a Sony console. That is what the theater is defending. Sony is not fishing for a new market. It is protecting the one Western franchise that already worked in its home country, on its own hardware.

Where Rockstar and everyone else are

Rockstar has no booth at Tokyo Game Show, and neither does Take-Two. The only place GTA 6 exists at the biggest show in Japan is inside Sony's room, alongside two GTA 6 DualSense controllers displayed behind glass at 12,480 yen each, reported by GAME Watch.

Xbox does have a presence, in Hall 6, according to its own announcement, with its own titles playable there. What it does not have is GTA 6. So a game launching on Xbox Series X and S on the same day as PlayStation 5 appears in Chiba as a PlayStation game, because Sony paid for that framing and nobody else contested it. Push Square's editor reported seeing no Xbox booth, a claim disputed by readers citing Xbox's own listing, which is why it is not repeated here.

What the room actually proves

PlayStation's own blog says the game plays best on PS5. Rockstar has never contradicted that line, and as far as can be found has never said it either. The list of what Rockstar declines to show has not got shorter in a month.

What the theater demonstrates is that Rockstar can be the largest thing in the hall without sending a single person to Japan, because Sony will build the room, pay for it, and apparently pay for the shirts as well.

The bet, and the day that tests it

Flagged as a bet before it is stated: GTA 6 beats 360,000 in its first week in Japan on PlayStation 5 alone. Two reasons, neither about how good the game is. 2013 had no Netflix premiere and no shaking floor, and no console maker treating somebody else's game as its own headline. And Push Square's reading is that Japan is the one territory where PlayStation cannot beat Nintendo, and a company that cannot win a market will overspend on the one game that lets it look like a contender.

The game launches in Japan on 19 November alongside every other region, so Famitsu's first week figure is roughly two months out. Before upgrading this from a bet, the thing to watch is the first public day on Saturday 19 September. If tickets go in thirty minutes with fans rather than badges, that is a real signal. If they last into the afternoon, the Thursday line was mostly the industry photographing itself, which is information too, just less flattering.

What we do not know yet

  • How many seats the theater has, since Sony has not published a number
  • Whether the public days produce the same ticket run as the business day
  • Where the first public hands-on with GTA 6 will happen, if anywhere before launch
